"Bibliotheque de Ratus", originally written for French-speaking children, offers good authentic reading material for the later stages of KS2. Ratus is an irrascible green rat. All the books are produced in full colour, humorously illustrated on each alternate page, with the added feature of a question linking picture and text to check comprehension. There is a key at the back and a simple illustrated glossary explaining the less familiar vocabulary. Level 1 would suit primary pupils in their second year of French.
